Day trip to Pittsfield, Ill.


The City of Pittsfield welcomes you to a whole new world of growth and opportunity. Pittsfield, county seat of Pike County, is located 65 miles west of Springfield, between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers just four miles south of Interstate 72. The following information will provide you with a brief overview of the City's history, recreation and activities.

History: Pittsfield was established in 1833 and designated as the county seat because of its central location within Pike County. Colonel William Ross was privileged to name the town in honor Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The Historical Society is located in Historic East School. Abraham Lincoln tried cases in and two of his personal secretaries lived here. There are nine buildings in that have direct connections with Lincoln and Lincoln history. One, the Shastid House, is being restored with funds provided by the City of Pittsfield. The historic courthouse is one of the buildings most photographed by tourists.

Recreation: The City of Pittsfield maintains four parks: The Pittsfield Little League Park, King Park and Lowry Park are located in the corporate limits of Pittsfield. These parks contain horseshoe courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, picnic pavilions and playground equipment. King Park has the only public swimming pool. The fourth park consists of 680 acres of recreational land surrounding the 200-acre city water supply lake. There are 2 RV campsites,several tent camping sites, boat launching facility,picnic areas, softball diamond, tennis courts and a hiking trail. In addition Pine Lakes, a private camp ground, offers a 4-acre stocked fishing lake with a wide verity of outdoor recreational activities available on site.

Festivities & Events: Spring Craft Show - March; Illini 4x4 Safari - May; Market on the Green, Abe Lincoln Days - June; Pig Days - July; Gathering of Eagles Fly-In - July; Pittsfield Fall Festival - Labor Day weekend; 4x4 Blast - September; Pike County Fall Color Drive - October; Christmas Craft Show - December.

Pittsfield Main Street Events: Head to www.Pittsfield-il.org for details of all events beginning in April and ending in August. The events include a summer concerts and ice cream social.
